Fun Friday Gross Foods We Love to Eat

Recently, I joined a yahoo group called Blogging for Fun. I discovered this group through one of Betchai’s blogs, Fun Friday. Every Friday, they come up with a common topic to write about. This is my first Fun Friday post and it’s not even a Friday. I am late by two days! Yikes! Well, better late than never!

Blogging for fun, here I come! The theme for this week’s Fun Friday is “Gross Foods We Love to Eat.” Being Asian, some of the things we eat are a bit strange to some non-Asians, so there are a lot of items flashing in my mind as I write this blog (teehee), Balut (duck embryo) would have topped my list of “gross eats,” but Betchai wrote about Balut already.

Here’s my item: Fish Head in Tamarind Soup. This is one of my favorite eats, especially those big heads with eyes that bulge and stare at me while I eat. Hahaha, I am just grossing you guys out! But seriously, there are many ways to cook fish head. You can fry it, bake it or grill it, but my favorite is fish head in tamarind broth. The process of boiling fish, meat or beef in tamarind broth is called "Sinigang." Just boil fish head in tamarind powder, add salt and leafy veggies and voila -fish head delight. The tamarind powder in a sachet can be found in almost any Asian store.

Today, for lunch, we had Tamarind soup with salmon head, yum! This dish is eaten with rice and best served when still very hot. Sometimes, it is paired with fish sauce -we call “Patis.”

Anthony Bourdain of “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations,” once said that the tastiest part of the fish is the meat found in its head.

For dessert, we had mangoes. Better take advantage while it is still in season!

Hi, Tes, glad to see another post in your blog, slowly, I know this will grow in time.

I love sinigang too, and I love the eyes in the fish, I know it is really ewwww for some, my students when they ask me if I eat the head and the eyes and when I say "yes", they say, "ewwwww", hehehe. But to those who tried, they tell me that they are never sorry for the meat in the head tastes best.

Tes, I love your lay-out, I should do mine soon, I just have to figure out how to download without missing characters.

Hi Betchai, thanks, glad you like the lay-out. Yes, I am happy to be able to have yet another post. I wasn't able to post anything for a week because I was configuring the page. Now, I think I'm ready to post.

Haha, I chose fish head as an eww-food because like some of your students, several of my friends here cannot eat fish when they see the head still attached to it, it even scares them.

hi tess!glad you joined our group. i actually like this food, lol! i'm used to it coz my parents love serving this for reasons I don't know. maybe because it's yummy, nutritious and economical. i think fish head tastes better than the body. but we don't pair it with patis,no way hehehe.

I love fish and I also love sinigang so this is not a gross food for me at all, this is yummy!

Hi Tes,

Welcome to the group! :)

I don't like certain fish varieties in sinigang! I can only eat tilapia or milkfish in sinigang, but everyone in the family loves it so when they cook some, I'd have to come up with my own set meal hehe.. :)

Have a great day!

I have to admit that I don't like the idea of eating food that is staring back at me. ;)

I made beef sinigang the other day coz i'm not too fond of the fish head. Mom does that a lot with miso but I honestly will just eat it if she serves me broken piecesand not a whole head.

i am looking at your fish head sinigang Tes, I am really missing it. I should really make this one, hopefully after we got back from vacation.

I love sinigang! Sinigang sa sampalok, sa santol, sa mangga, sa kamias...kahit ano basta sinigang ok na ok sa kin.

I've never tried salmon though. or even just the head. I'm sure my mom would love this, though I am not a fan of eating fish aside from tuna. :D

I like the layout of your site and it's deco. About the gross food, it's not so gross...I call it EXOTIC. Once a little girl, I had to fight for the fish eyes among my bros and sis... I love them...hehehe
