Books By My Bedside Table

It’s Fun Friday once again at Blogging for Fun.Topic: Fave Five Books. This is difficult because I cannot limit my favorites to five, so I settled for seven (hehe). I call these books: books by my bedside table. Technically, these are not always by my bedside but figuratively, they are good companions in life’s journey. I have a habit of re-reading books that I have already read and I rendezvous with the author and try to gain strength from their experiences and wise words.

My all time favorite (so far) is Max Lucados’s Facing Your Giants: This book was a gift from my husband last Christmas. We were faced with a ferocious giant in the form of cancer. I HAD cancer. It was a difficult time for us, and this book saw me through.

“Focus on your giant - you stumble.”

“Focus on God – your giant stumbles.”

This book encouraged me to take my focus out of the enemy and live the best way I can, and now, I AM cancer-free!

In no particular order, here are the books that I’m proud to call companions:

The Right to Write by Julia Cameron : Julia made a writer in me. I am NOT an expert but I have gained passion in writing.

“We should write because writing brings clarity and passion to the act of living.”-Julia Cameron

Tuesdays with Morie by Mitch Albom : An inspiring book for teachers and those who we learn from.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren : A blueprint to living a life with purpose.

Lo-carb Meals on the Go : this book doesn’t just offer meals, it offers a lifestyle, and they mean it when they used that words “on the go!” It’s something I can make in a snap. My favorites are the veggie wraps and salmon recipes.

Experiencing God Day by Day by Henry and Richard Blackaby : is small enough to carry around in my bag. It’s a daily devotional that gets me back on track. Pulls me back whenever I’m falling to pieces. The entries are short enough for people (like me) who are on the go.

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz : Introduced by my friend, Esa, in 2002 and has proven to be a sturdy companion for all time.

In a nutshell, here are the four agreements . . .

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

In between these serious-sounding titles, I love to read humorous books and have plenty of magazines varying from scrapbooking, interior design, gardening, fashion, and whathaveyou. . .

Low Carb Meals on the Go sounds like a goodie for me. The Four Agreements I like; if you can't live by your own rules, be happy with them, then you are sunk. Thanks for sharing your "by the bed" books.

this is very true Tes, and am so happy to have witnessed how your giant stumbled! You have been through a lot of tough times, and now, you are one cancer-free woman. I am glad during those tough days of your life, you remained strong, and am sure these books walked with you in your journey.

Tes, I do agreed with you, books can actually widen and brighten our view point, authors took years to develop their experiences and pen down in book, yet we take only hours to complete it. Sorry, I have books by my toilet bowl oso. :)

Your four agreements are good directions to us. I especially like the second one (DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY), it applies anywhere in our life.

I think I would like that one about learning to write. I actually love to write, almost as much as talk LOL, I need practice though. Since started homeschooling, and blogging, I have had to pay more attention to how I write, so that has been great. Thank you for sharing your books with us.

Thank you for visiting my blog! I was curious about Max Lucado's book... you've enticed me to read it this summer. The Four Agreements is also on my bookshelf - my husband's favorite. I haven't read it yet. I am so happy that you are cancer-free and again thank you for visiting! By the way, I love your photo of the books AND your blog. I'll be back!

I love books.. next to my dog, my books are my best friend when I am at home. Jeff won't like to hear he was not my best friend when I am at home (lol).

I personally like Julia Cameron because she is just one creative genius.

And she also inspired me to let my thoughts flow into paper. That's when I also encountered doing morning pages and I have loved her ever since.

Thanks,Leo. Our friend, Betchai gave me courage to get my own domain (Thanks Beth).

A student of mine gave me "Tuesdays with Morie" as a present, and he wrote "not all teachers are a Morie... thank you for teaching us about what matter most -life." He is a lawyer now.

Engtot, knowing you, you and Don Miguel Ruiz (author of Four Agreements) will be best friends right away! Hehe

Hello. I also like Mac Lucado's books and I subscribed to his weekly devotional from Crosswalk. I have also read "The Purpose Driven Life." It's a must read for Christians. Glad to have dropped by in your blog today.

I also have The Right to Write by Julia Cameron. It was a gift from my bestfriend for Christmas in 2006.

This and her other book, The Artist's Way are my bedside favorites.

I love books about writing. In fact, I also have a copy of Writing Down the Bones (another gift) by Natalie Goldberg and "On Writing: A memoir by Stephen King".

I could go on and on about this topic..haha..maybe I should write my own Fun Friday entry now. :D
