A Squirrel's Story

These shots were taken some time in April during one of my scan days. Even after my oncologist pronounced me as cancer-free I still need to subject myself to those tedious follow-up scans done every twelve weeks. A "scan" day consumes almost the whole of my day with a long list of battery of tests –I’ve no complains– I need it. Anyway, in between tests, there would be a two or three-hour wait. Some tests need to be spaced out. During those long waiting period in between tests, my husband and I would go out into the gardens of MD Anderson –lovely garden- especially in spring. Huge trees, flowers in full bloom and busy squirrels running around. I always bring my camera for scenes like these.

Here is Mr. Squirrel, whose attention was obviously caught by something. We observed quietly and saw the object of his fascination…

We knew he wanted that object very much. It has captivated his full attention. He deliberated whether to cross the wide open space, or not –he’d be too exposed!

Made up his mind to take his chances, in the throes of crossing the pavement, he paused, stood up, looked me straight in the eye –as if posing, as if asking “what is that?” as he curiously eyed the contraption I held in my hand (my camera) I continued to snap, refusing to be intimidated by him!

Without warning, as if he got bored sniffing and eyeing me, he skipped and chased after the object of his fascination.

Once it was securely in his mouth, he bounded speedily and crossed the pavement without looking at me

From a distance, secured in the mulch-covered plant bed, he paused and eyed me again, he must be as curious about me, as I am of him. (acorn secure in his mouth)

Then he went back to work diligently, burying the acorn under the dark shadow of the rose bushes.

Alas, I thought that was the end of the squirrel’s story. . .

Then he looked up as if searching for me, spotted me, and focused (again) on the contraption hanging around my neck –my camera…

He bravely stood up –like what he did when crossing that pavement- and stared intently at me! I have no clue as to what that stance is all about, am guessing he was asking me to leave him alone (Just look at that serious face)

Then he turned around, still eyeing me from his peripheral vision – at the side of his eyes- and vigorously labored –burying the acorn under the shadow of the bush.

What he did next puzzled me. With his eyes still alert on me, he wiggled his behind, crouched down on his belly and crossed his arms. Hmmm

Then ever so slowly he stretched his hind legs…

And spread out his arms out…

Now that was too much… I was gaping in fascination and without intending to hurt his tender sentiments, mirth build up, bubbling, then a loud bellowing erupted from my throat and a shout of frenzied laughter reverberated as I realized what Mr. Squirrel was trying to do! -he was even giving me the dagger look! Hahaha!

"This is MINE!" he says... hahaha

His eyes followed me everywhere. . .

When I was able to catch my breath, I smiled, backed away and left. . .

These pics are awesome. You could create a children's book from them! I am glad you are feeling better.

I substitute taught head start for 6 years while working other jobs full time. It was amazing.

Take care & God bless!

It was so hilarious, Rochelle! We had a blast –Doods (my hubby) and I… at first, we can’t understand what kind of ritual he was about to do! lol

Oh wow, Judy, nice to know you were at head start –its fun right! Never a dull moment with the little one. I did show these photos to my students, but your idea is so much better, I will make it into a book for my class! Thank you for the suggestion. I am excited to start working on it!

Eric, really near. I did not have time to switch to my zoom lens. Mr Squirrel was just so tame.

Thanks, Beth, am glad this post made you laugh, hope it has made your tiredness evaporate... Good luck on the homework.

Thanks, Cher! I will try my best! Am really having a blast with my camera -fast becoming my new best friend!

I agree with Judy! You should turn this into a children's story and write a book!

Your shots are amazing. I haven't met anyone yet (til now that is) who was able to capture a squirrel in action! I'm so thrilled to be reading your story Teacher Tes.

I want a rabbit story next...hehe magrequest ba!?

Isn't he cute? My dog lies out like that, on his belly, maybe they are related LOL. My kids love to watch the squirrels. Alot of people think of them as pests, but we encourage them to eat from the bird feeder, they are fun to watch. The birds don't mind sharing.

This was such a fun story to read, oh and the photos to go with it, boy did this squirrel have a personality to tell you that acorn was all his.

What an nice was to pass the time waiting between horrid tests.

Isis, girl, your idea is inviting. If my husband can't find me, I might be in the meadows sending mental telepathy to the rabbits -hahaha! But a rabbit story would be challenging! They are not as tame as the squirrels! There was a time, when we came home and found a huge white rabbit in my front yard eating my petunias...hahaha!

Melissa, your dog might be related to this Mr Squirrel, they practice the same ritual -teehee. And you're right, it is fun to watch them!

Oh yes, Liss -that's the word, a personality of his own! Hehe...

Oh Tes, that is a wonderful story, and I agree with Judy about putting that in a book form.

Beautiful photos of the squirrel..I love the ones that he stood straight up..

For some reasons, your feed didn't show up in my blog list until today..

Your squirrel shots are really impressive. I seem to scare them away before I can take the shots.

I love the way he stands up exposing everything. Are we going to consider him totally naked or fully covered with fur?... huh! ~bangchik

I love and adore watching squirrels (but you might have guessed that from my screen name), they are little clowns sometimes.

This little guy had a mission and was determined to get that acorn. I have seen them protect something like that a time or two buts it's rare to catch.

Great photos.

Your squirrel pictures are so cute! My favorite is the one standing. I love tree squirrels, but my area doesn't have any, only tiny ground squirrels.

Now that I have seen quite a number of blogs with series of photos like these. It makes me want to grab my camera and start looking for my subject. I remember seeing CheR did the same thing with a dragonfly.

You are getting better and better with your photo shooting Tes !
