Calcium Prevents Bone Loss

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Some three years past, I lost my uterus and ovaries to leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. A massive six-pound tumor was removed from my uterus. Needless to say, my uterus and ovaries had to go. Yes, I joined the hyster (hysterectomy) sisters at an earlier age. Mine was the uncommon case of surgical menopause.

The thing is, once women undergo menopause -whether surgical or natural- we lose bone mass. To minimize or avoid bone loss, it is advisable that we increase weight bearing exercises and do a lot of running to toughen our bones. Additionally, we need to increase our intake of calcium. Simple diet might not provide the huge amount of calcium we need at this point. My doctor recommended I take as much as 1200 mg. a day.

After hearing about my twice daily calcium requirement, Doods and I went online and did a quick price check. After all we are talking about something that might possibly be a long term thing.  We compared prices and found Walgreens Calcium 600+D Dietary Supplement Tablets much cheaper than name brand dietary supplements. I've been taking Walgreens calcium 600+D since 2008. I take it twice a day -one in the morning and one at night. It is advisable to split up the dosage as the body can only absorb so much at one time.

I was completely menopausal at the age of 45. When I had extensive back surgery a few years prior to that, the spinal tissue came back from pathology as "moderately osteoporotic" - maybe due to late pregnancies at 38 and 40. Rapid dosing with Calcium + D and eating/drink more calcium rich foods made a huge difference. I buy the generic brand at Costco which I found even less expensive than Walgreen's.
